Transfer Credit Policy
The Program for Communication Excellence accepts transfer credit for communication courses according to the rules and procedures established in the Rice University General Announcements and as administered by the Registrar’s office. The Rice Registrar’s Office suggests a student allow at least four weeks for approval for transfer credit (please see http://registrar.rice.edu/students/transfer_credit/ for Registrar’s guidelines on receiving transfer credit).
To qualify for transfer credit for COMM 103, the course must be comparable in emphasis, methods, and types and number of assignments, which means the course must focus more on instruction in writing and oral communication than on discussions of readings and that the students should have been expected to fulfill the following requirements:
- Write four to five academic papers of various lengths and types (minimum of 25 pages for the semester);
- Submit drafts and rewrite papers when assigned;
- Read assigned texts that relate to required writing;
- Deliver at least two formal oral presentations; and
- Write a 6 to 8 page multi-source research paper.
Conforming to the guidelines for transfer credit across the campus, we will not accept credit from a community college. To receive transfer credit, the course must have been taken at a 4-year accredited college or university before matriculation at Rice. In addition, we will not accept AP credit to satisfy the requirement.
If your course qualifies and meets the other restrictions above, you will need to petition to the Program for Communication Excellence. Your petition must include the following:
- A cover letter/e-mail indicating why you wish to obtain transfer credit. This letter must include complete contact information (campus or local address, phone, number, and e-mail address).
- Completed Transfer Credit Form from the Registrar’s office.
- Copy of catalogue or web page materials from the college or university showing the course number and course description. The copy must indicate the name of the university and date of the catalogue, and if from a Web page, the specific URL for that page must be included.
- Course syllabus.
- Transcript showing credit.
- Two sample papers.
Submit the petition with all of six items at least two weeks before the deadline for the second Comp Exam to ugcomm@rice.edu.
Incomplete petitions will not be processed.
